One of the most exciting and thrilling games to play on the computer is Grand Theft Auto IV. Featuring an excellent storyline, grand visuals, and addictive multiplayer action, Rockstar Games adds another gem to its already stellar GTA series. Being able to fully enjoy the game, however, requires hardware that is up to the task. This article will list several recommended components letting you fully immerse yourself in the GTA IV world. At the time of its release in 2008, GTA IV had some fairly high system requirements. Many people discovered they did not have adequate hardware to power the game and were left frustrated. Don’t let this happen to you. Lets find some hardware worthy of GTA IV.

Recommended CPU

The required processor for GTA IV is an Intel Core 2 Duo 1.8Ghz or equivalent AMD Athlon X2 64 2.4Ghz. With several advancements in processor capabilities since 2008, I suggest using at least a quad core CPU, such as the AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition AM3 CPU icon or the Intel Core i5-2500K Unlocked Processor icon. With either one of these at the core of your gaming computer, you can't go wrong. Both feature four cores for the ultimate gaming power and are very comparable in price, right around the $200 range. With an exceptionally fast CPU, now we just need some fast memory to send all that information the CPU's way.

Recommended Memory

The listed memory requirement is 1GB for Windows XP users and 1.5GB for Vista. For even the most modest gaming computer, 4GB of DDR3 memory is the minimum. You never want the memory to be the bottleneck in your system especially being that RAM is at the lowest prices its been in years. 4GB of DDR3 memory will cost about $50-60 and this Corsair 4GB memory set icon is a bargain. I highly recommend using Corsair memory for a gaming computer. I have used it extensively for the last 10 years and have no issues whatsoever.

Recommended Video Card

Grand Theft Auto 4 is big on the visuals and rightfully so. You'll need a card that's up to the Liberty City sized challenge. A 256MB NVIDIA 7900 or ATI 256MB X1900 video card is required to run the game but we can do much better than that. This EVGA GeForce 9800 GT Video Card icon or this Gigabyte Radeon HD 5450 OC Video Card icon should deliver all the great visual details with ease. Not enjoying GTA IV at the highest settings really means you are missing out. Select the right video card and you won't have to worry about settings at all, just pick the highest for all categories!

Recommended Storage Size

Checking in at 16GB, GTA IV needs plenty of free space on your hard drive in order to operate at the highest capacity. I recommend at least 30GB of free space and a hard drive with a large buffer size, such as this Western Digital Caviar Black Hard Drive icon with 32MB buffer size. A small buffer size on a hard drive can cause episodes of periodic slowdown due to the hard drive sending information to the memory and in turn the CPU. Purchasing a hard drive with at least a 16MB cache size should eliminate this problem.

Conclusion

Grand Theft Auto IV is a real treat to play. It is not surprising why it has sold as many copies as it has. A great storyline, stunning visuals, and all the small details really make Liberty City come to life. If you have yet to experience GTA IV, I highly recommend you do. GTA IV was considered a bit of a "hardware hog" when it was first released but now it is pretty tame with the newer advancements in technology. With the components listed above, you will be able to enjoy every last bit of Liberty City.
